Q. If I meet the criteria for application, will I be admitted to your PhD Program?
A. Admission is competitive and acceptance depends on admissions criteria as well as your research interests, the ability to match you with an adviser, and the profile of applicants.
Q. Why not recruit an incoming cohort every year?
A. We recruit every other year in order to ensure a larger cohort, which creates better group dynamics between students and faculty, and fosters a more creative environment conducive to researching and learning.
Q. What funding is available for doctoral students?
A. Scholarships covering tuition remission for all and stipends covering living expenses for some – based on merit. Please refer to Funding and Support.
Q. Can international students apply to this program?
A. International students are looked at alongside domestic students and neither group is given any preference; places are given on merit. Note that admitted students must still follow appropriate visa application processes.
Q. How many PhD students are admitted each year per program (marketing, management, IPM, accounting?
A. There are no fixed numbers for particular departments, though note that the business program is slightly bigger as it includes more departments. There are specific calls in particular areas connected to grants (see funding & support). In general, we rank students on performance and fit with faculty interests across all departments in either business or accountancy.
Q. I did my master’s in the US, can I waive the TOEFL?
A. TOEFL scores are waived for students who have studied in the United States or other programs taught in English (UK, Australia) for at least two years.
Q. What if I have minimal work experience?
A. We believe that work experience is important for students wanting to study and teach in a business-related field. However, candidates with very strong academic credentials, who have not had much managerial or business experience, may be considered.
Q. I have a general idea about a research area but nothing specific. How focused and detailed should I be?
A. We are not looking for fully formed ideas at the admission stage. What we want to know is where your interests are likely to lie so that we can match you with a faculty member who will initially at least act as your primary adviser. After your first year, when you may have a clearer idea of where you want to focus, you will be asked to chose whether you want to continue with your initial primary supervisor or make a change.
Q. What kinds of research areas are Bentley faculty interested in?
A. You can go to the Bentley web site and check this out. The PhD pages under both the Business and Accountancy programs list all the faculty who could be your primary adviser; you can also look at other faculty in the Bentley University database. If there is a faculty member who looks to have research interests in line with your own, you can contact him or her and begin a conversation even before you submit your formal application.
